  • 국제암연구소(IARC; International Agency for Research on Cancer) = 세계보건기구(WHO) 산하 기구
  • 체외실험, 동물실험과 사람을 대상으로 한 역학적 연구 등에 근거하여 발암성을 평가해 발암 요인을 5개 군으로 분류 (Agents classified by the IARC Monographs, Volumes 1–130)

발암 요인 분류 기준

  • 1군: 인간에게 암을 유발하는 것이 확실함(Carcinogenic to humans), 121종
  • 2A군: 인간에게 암을 유발할 개연성이 높음(Probably carcinogenic to humans), 90종
  • 2B군: 인간에게 암을 유발할 가능성이 있음(Possibly carcinogenic to humans), 322종
  • 3군: 인간에 대한 발암성을 분류할 수 없음(Not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans), 498종
